How to use Bower
Install it once, then it mostly stays out of your way. Here's everything, from the first ⌥1 to the stuff you'll find in a month.
Install
- Get Xcode from the App Store and open it once so it finishes setting up. Then install XcodeGen:
brew install xcodegen
- Download Bower and build it. It ends up in your Applications folder and opens:
git clone https://github.com/truthofmatthew/bower cd bower ./install.sh
Building with your own Apple ID? Put your team ID inproject.ymlfirst (DEVELOPMENT_TEAM). - The welcome window asks for Accessibility. Click Open System Settings and turn Bower on under Privacy & Security › Accessibility. You don't need to restart anything; Bower notices within a second.
Your first two minutes
- Switch layouts: press ⌥1, then ⌥2. Layout 2 starts empty, so your windows step aside. ⌥1 brings them all back exactly where they were.
- Give a window a new home: click it, press ⇧⌥2. It moves to layout 2.
- Snap: hold ⌃⌥←. You see where the window will go; let go and it's there.
- Name your layouts: click the menu bar icon › Settings › Layouts, and click a name to rename it.
Every shortcut
All of them can be changed (or cleared with ⌫) in Settings › Shortcuts. ISO keyboards can switch Center Third to the key left of Z.
| ⌥1 … ⌥9 | Switch to that layout |
| ⇧⌥1 … 9 | Send the focused window to a layout |
| ⌥Tab · ⌥N | Next layout · next empty layout |
| ⌥↑ | Layouts Bar |
| ⌃⌥Space | Snap Wheel (or middle-click, or tap with three fingers) |
| ⌃⌥ + ← → ↑ ↓ | Halves |
| ⌃⌥ + U I J K | Quarters |
| ⌃⌥ + D F G · E T | Thirds · two thirds |
| ⌃⌥↩ | Maximize |
| ⌃⌥R | Retile the display (Bento Box) |
| ⌃⌥⌘ + arrows | Focus the window on that side |
| ⌃Tab | Next tab in the group (Tabs mode) |
| ⌃⌥S | Save the current workspace |
The Snap Wheel
Hold the middle button, move onto an action, let go. Or click once (or tap with three fingers) to keep it open and click what you want. From the keyboard: an arrow picks a wedge, arrows walk around the ring, Tab jumps rings, → opens a ▸ arc, ↩ runs it, esc closes it.
The outer ring is yours: Settings › Snap Wheel. Drag an action onto a slot, or click a slot and then an action. Hidden slots do nothing.
Window Modes
Each display has its own mode in each layout (menu bar icon › Mode for This Display).
- Native: windows stay where you put them.
- Bento Box: the window you used last takes the left column, the rest share a grid. Open or close a window and it retiles.
- Tabs: windows from any app share one pane under a tab strip. Drag a tab to the pane's right edge to split it in two; drag it onto the other strip to move it. ⌃Tab cycles.
It remembers things
- Workspaces: ⌃⌥S saves every layout, mode and window position under a name. Load it from the menu bar icon › Workspaces.
- Apps that quit: reopen the app (or restart the Mac) and its windows go back to their layouts.
- Monitors you unplug: their windows wait on the Offline shelf (Settings › Displays). Plug the monitor back in and they return; or use Move to… to put them on another display.
- Pinned displays: pin a display and it keeps its windows when you switch layouts. Handy for Slack on the side monitor.
AI Recipes
Install Ollama or LM Studio and download a model. In Settings › AI pick the preset, choose the model and click Test Connection. Then menu bar icon › Recipes › New Recipe…, write what you want, press Preview, and Apply if you like it. Type @ for app and display names.
Something looks wrong
- Windows are missing: they're parked in another layout. Press its number, or quit Bower from the menu bar; every window comes back.
- Nothing moves: check that Bower is on in Privacy & Security › Accessibility. After rebuilding, turn it off and on again there.
- A full-screen app: Bower works on the Space you're in, so use it from your desktop.
- Still stuck? Tell me and I'll fix it.
